Accra Mall and Groceries in Ghana- June 10

We slept in then went to the Accra Mall.


It was about an hour drive and one portion of the road was extremely bumpy with tons of potholes (and it was a dirt road). But, this area was right under a bridge being constructed so I can see how this will be much better in a few years. 





Our driver said that the roads are made worse by the rain and they have to repair them often. Motorbikes were able to easily navigate this so I see why a lot of people use them here. Every single taxi or Bolt we have taken has been a very small car, it is rare to see a minivan or SUV.




The mall had a large parking lot and there was definitely a higher proportion of non-locals here. It felt very similar to an American mall. We ate at a coffee shop (coffee is not common here as far as we’ve seen). We also have not noticed many baked goods being sold in Ghana and never any sweet pastries. We walked around the whole mall; there were a few clothing stores and many stores you’d find in the US or elsewhere like MAC, Sketchers, Levi’s, and Swatch. There were two Ghanaian fabric stores and a Ghanaian souvenir shop. There were also lots of food places including a KFC which seems to be the most common fast food here! 


We looked around and I bought a skirt and earrings then did some shopping at ShopRite in the mall. It was super crowded but the same as the other ShopRite we’d been to. 

Lots of fresh fruits and vegetables cost a lot here. These large bell peppers cost about 38 US dollars/kg. They had lots of Kerrygold butter for cheaper than the US though.



The area the mall was in was definitely more upscale and had bigger roads than our area of Accra, as well as more industrial places like warehouses and busyards. We did see this Mosque which our driver said is the largest in Ghana. (about 25% of Ghana is Muslim, mainly in the North, but also noticeable in Accra too). We then went back home and ordered dinner of fried chicken and rice. We hung around the house and watched a movie while some worked (some people here are in the middle of applying to med or PA school) and planned future days.


It has been raining and thundering a lot here tonight, it was down pouring so hard that it was hard to hear others talk across the room.

Last Hospital Day- June 30

  Friday June 30 Today was my last day in the hospital!! We started off with the weekly Friday morning meeting for most of the doctors. A doctor presented on respiratory distress in infants, it lasted about 45 min. Then, I went to the Outpatient ward with Dr. Mensah. Today we saw several cases including rashes, malnutrition, and viruses. Whenever a patient comes in, the parent brings the current medication they are on to show the doctor. Almost all kids start on herbal medications or paracetamol from a local pharmacy then come in when it doesn’t improve. One of my roommates had a cold and the medicine bought for her from our coordinator was an herbal cough medicine that mainly consisted of thyme extract. So, I think herbal medications are generally the first line of defense here.  Something interesting is that in the standard medical history questions the doctor gives to each patient, she would ask if they sleep under a treated mosquito net, most did. OPD, Malnutrition Mortality, and US Hot Topics- June 29

  Thursday June 29 Today I went to the outpatient department. Normally this would have been a special clinic day (I think either sickle cell or HIV), but today was supposed to have been the holiday celebrated yesterday so they didn’t schedule any clinic appointment for today (the lunar calendar that decides when the holiday is wasn’t totally accurate since it’s based on when a human first sees a certain moon and there is often cloud cover, so they had to change the date about a week before). The outside statues of Princess Marie and Dr. Cecily Williams (a malnutrition pioneer researcher) were decorated for the holiday.   Some people still came in and the doctor had to tell them to come next week since the staff for the clinic weren’t in today. Travel + First Day (and a marriage proposal!)

 Hey! It's currently the night of my first full day in Accra, but wow I feel like I've done so much already! Here's a rundown of my trip so far. I flew from SeaTac to London leaving around 2:30pm and arriving at 7 am in London. The airport was super confusing and I had to go through security again and get my boarding pass and visa scanned etc which took a long time because several kiosks didn’t work. I had a few hours in the airport then I boarded the plane to Ghana. It seemed like mostly native Ghanaians but there were some Americans and Brits (mostly going people). I slept on the plane some and we landed at 6:40 pm, it was already dark when we landed.  That is the view of Accra from the plane.  We got off and the passport control was fast but then I waited about an hour for my bag.
